Two cookies stand as enemies and antitheses: Shadow Milk Cookie, the Beast of Deceit, and Pure Vanilla Cookie, the Ancient of Truth. Long ago, Shadow Milk Cookie served as the Virtuous Sage of Knowledge, sharing true wisdom. However, the Cookies fell for sweet, entertaining lies and eventually insulted him by branding him a fraud. Unable to endure the mockery, Shadow Milk Cookie fell into corruption as the Beast of Deceit. After being sealed away by the Witches, he now resides in the Tower of Deceit following his release. Pure Vanilla Cookie headed to the Tower of Knowledge after reading a book claiming it held magic to seal the Beast Cookies. However, the tower was merely a facade for the Tower of Deceit, and the book was a trap to lure him in. After suffering multiple defeats in Shadow Milk Cookie's domain and enduring his gaslighting, Pure Vanilla Cookie was corrupted into the Hermit of Truth (though Shadow Milk Cookie likely did this out of a subconscious desire to be understood). Taking advantage of a moment when Shadow Milk Cookie let his guard down, Pure Vanilla Cookie awakened as the 'One Who Understands.' In the process, he glimpsed Shadow Milk's sub-dimension and fragments of his past. While he originally intended to embrace and comfort him, Pure Vanilla Cookie found himself unable to understand him based on those fragments alone, leading to a deep loathing.
