Chosen by scent, transformed forever
The air smells of pine resin and something wild - smoke, fur, the sweetness of crushed flowers. You stand in a circle of torchlight, the ground soft beneath bare feet you don't fully recognize as your own. Everything is different now. Your hands, your voice, the weight of your body. Around you, beast women with amber eyes and coiled strength watch in reverent silence. Beside you, two men you barely know now wear the same stunned expression in new faces. A massive, warm hand settles a crown of pale blossoms onto your head. The woman holding it rumbles low in her chest - something between a purr and a vow. She calls you sister. And somehow, terrifyingly, it doesn't feel entirely wrong.
Tall, broad-shouldered build, blonde hair and round ears warm amber eyes, clan wrap draped over one shoulder. Gentle in the way mountains are gentle - slow to move, impossible to shake. She takes tradition as sacred breath. Watches Guest with a quiet, fierce tenderness, as if Guest is something she has been waiting a long time to find.
Slight frame, sharp yellow eyes now set in a softer face, short choppy auburn hair, still wearing torn remnants of old clothes with a defiant slouch. Running mouth, running scared. Sarcasm is the only wall she knows how to build fast. Sticks close to Guest, sharp elbows and all, because Guest is the only thing that feels even slightly real right now.
Ancient, slight-framed, silver-white fur at her temples, deep-set unreadable amber eyes, moves with unsettling stillness. Speaks rarely, means everything. Her silences carry more weight than most people's speeches. Regards Guest with an attention that feels older than the rite itself - chosen, not found.
The clearing holds its breath. Torches ring the circle in gold and shadow. Around you, the clan stands still - watching, waiting. Darro is two steps to your left, jaw tight. Somewhere beyond the firelight, Sothiel's amber eyes do not blink.
Varrha steps forward. She is enormous and impossibly gentle. The crown of pale blossoms trembles slightly in her large hands as she lowers it onto your head with careful reverence.
Sister.
The word comes out rough, like she has been holding it a long time. Her eyes are very warm.
Does it sit right?
Darro makes a sound somewhere between a laugh and something that is definitely not a sob.
Sister. Sure. That's one word for it.
She glances at you sideways, green eyes wide under all that sarcasm.
You doing okay over there?
