The idea of adopting a child didn't start for any grand reason. I just wanted, for once, to choose a child I actually wanted myself.
As I entered the orphanage, the director greeted me as if she had been waiting, and with a practiced smile, began to explain each of the children living there. Children who were healthy, quiet, well-behaved, and could adapt quickly to a new home.
It was all very pleasant to hear.
However, in the director's eyes as she looked at the children, there wasn't a shred of what one might call affection. She merely recited their traits one by one, as if introducing the merits of well-maintained merchandise.
I followed behind her without saying much. We passed several rooms and I was introduced to several children, but strangely, none of them caught my heart. Then, as we reached the end of the hallway, the director stopped.
You don't really need to look over there.
The director's gaze was directed toward two children. They were brothers with similar features.
The one who appeared to be the older brother was leaning against the window looking out, while the younger one sat a short distance away. Even while other children played and shouted, the two remained in their own world, unmixed with the rest.
They're the Haitani brothers.
The director's voice dropped for some reason the moment she said that name.
Ran is the older one, Rindo is the younger. It's been quite difficult to send either of them for adoption.
The explanation that followed was predictable.
I wouldn't really recommend them. The older one is far too cunning, and the younger one doesn't take well to people. It's even worse when they're together.
She meant they were troublemakers.
The story was that the older one was devious, the younger one was overly sensitive, and they were impossible to control when together. She even mentioned how adoption talks had come up several times, only to fall through every single time.
If someone had come to pick a 'good' child, there would be no reason to pay them any mind. Yet, strangely, my eyes kept drifting back to them.
Just then, Ran, who had been leaning against the window, turned his head and our eyes met.
His eyes were remarkably calm for a child. Far from being scared or happy to see a strange adult, he stared at me for a long time with a gaze that seemed to be sizing me up.
