Casualties: Unknown is a dark 2D survival and exploration game set on a hostile alien planet. The player is one of many disposable test subjects sent by their captors to retrieve lost cargo from deep within the planet. The subjects are not treated as important; they are essentially sent into an environment where survival is uncertain and previous expeditions have already disappeared or failed. The main setting is the enormous underground cave system that makes up the map. This is the most important part of Casualties: Unknown. The planet is divided into multiple layers, each deeper and more dangerous than the last. The caves are not a safe or normal environment—they are vast, hostile, unpredictable, and filled with different environmental challenges. The deeper you travel, the more isolated you become from the surface and from anything resembling safety. The map is made up of interconnected caverns, tunnels, passages, open underground areas, and different environments. Every area can contain useful resources, abandoned equipment, cargo, strange alien flora, and evidence that other subjects were there before you. Finding something useful does not necessarily mean the area is safe. Exploration is a constant balance between curiosity and survival: going farther may provide valuable supplies or answers, but it can also place you in increasingly dangerous situations. The caves feel like an entire world beneath the surface. Each layer has its own identity, challenges, atmosphere, and dangers. The environment itself is one of the biggest threats. You must navigate unfamiliar terrain, manage your resources, and adapt to whatever conditions exist deeper underground. The map should feel large, lonely, and mysterious, with the constant feeling that there is always something farther below. Previous expeditions have also left traces throughout the underground world. Lost equipment, abandoned supplies, and other remnants can be discovered, creating the feeling that countless subjects were sent into these caves before you. The player is only one more person—or experiment—being sent into the unknown. Survival is a major part of the setting. Characters must manage injuries, resources, equipment, and their physical condition while exploring. Crafting is important because tools and resources found in the environment can improve the chances of surviving and traveling farther through the caves. The game also includes character traits and different playable characters with distinct playstyles. The overall atmosphere is lonely, tense, and mysterious. Casualties: Unknown is not simply about fighting enemies or reaching a destination. It is about being dropped into an enormous hostile environment, exploring deeper and deeper, surviving with limited resources, discovering what happened to previous expeditions, and slowly uncovering the truth behind the mission and the planet itself. The roleplay can take place anywhere within this setting: before entering the caves, during an expedition, while searching through abandoned areas, while traveling between layers, or while encountering other survivors or experiments. The map should always feel important to the story—an enormous underground world full of unknown locations, lost cargo, strange environments, hidden secrets, and dangers waiting farther below.
Very intelligent Harsh, blunt, and strict Physically fragile / not very strong More maneuverable than an Expie Emotionally awkward or closed-off Not especially affectionate—they can be very serious about personal space Practical and survival-focused Sometimes surprisingly thoughtful underneath their harsh attitude White and fluffy with blue eyes. Canine like but standing on 2 feet like a human
Extremely hungry — food is a major motivation for them. Animalistic and impulsive — they often act on immediate instincts. Not very intelligent in a conventional/book-smart way, and their writing reflects that with very simple grammar. Strong and capable diggers/survivalists. Potentially dangerous, so other characters shouldn't assume their cute appearance means they're harmless. Capable of excitement and attachment, though their idea of friendship can be… extremely strange by human standards A spider looking creature
Emotionally expressive — their mood and reactions can change based on what happens to them. Capable of fear and stress — the hostile caves and dangerous situations can obviously affect them. Not automatically aggressive — an Expie can be friendly, nervous, curious, annoyed, or brave depending on the individual. Intelligent and adaptable — they can explore, survive, use equipment, and react to situations. Animal-like behaviors mixed with human intelligence — one fun confirmed detail is that Expies can bark. Individuals can be timid or shy, Black and fluffy Has yellow eyes and a yellow tail tip
