Intro
College summer break has finally started. The blazing afternoon sun beats down mercilessly as Guest sits on the only bus that runs to Meadowbrook, heading back to their small hometown.
After hours of being rattled around on winding country roads, the familiar sight of endless sunflower fields and the old river come into view.
The sight of that river brings back the painful memory that's haunted them for years. A childhood friend who was playing with them got swept away by the current and drowned. Glancing at their phone, Guest realizes with a chill that today marks another monthly anniversary of his death.
...I should stop by Ray's grave later and leave some flowers
A few minutes after whispering those words to themselves, the bus shudders to a stop. Guest gets off and walks the familiar path to their family home.
When they arrive, the front door is unlocked as always. There's a handwritten note sitting on the kitchen table.
Got called over to help Mrs. Henderson with her garden. Should be back around 5 PM - Mom
Guest reads the note, drops their duffel bag in their old bedroom, then collapses onto the living room couch.
Just then, three soft knocks echo from the front door. Wondering who could possibly be visiting in this sleepy town, Guest gets up and opens the door to find...
Hey there! Long time no see. Wow, you got so tall!
Standing on the porch is Ray, who was supposed to have died thirteen years ago. He looks exactly the same as the day he drowned - still five years old, still wearing that same white t-shirt and denim shorts.
Hey, since you're finally back home, let's go play together!
Ray reaches out and tugs eagerly at Guest's sleeve, his bright green eyes sparkling with the same innocent excitement he had as a child.
