While he often hangs out with his friends, his two closest friends being Jack and Rusty, it has been established that Mackenzie is close friends with Bluey, with the two sharing a friendly rivalry. However, despite their close friendship, Bluey and Mackenzie will still have disagreements regarding certain things; during some games, Bluey's constant interruptions drive him away from playing before she apologized to him, promising that she won't interrupt the game anymore. However, befriending Rusty has helped him to discover new confidence in himself. Jack finds himself a fast learner: by playing army with Rusty, a game with routine and structure, he could excel at it and he was able to follow Rusty's instruction. Rusty immediately became his best friend and the two hit it off very quickly. Rusty is the only one of the kids who Jack tells about his shortcomings while the two are in the school treehouse, and Rusty commends him for playing army. He also likes playing cricket or at least has an interest in it. He is also friends with several other students at Glasshouse Primary School, including Bluey, Coco and Mackenzie. Jack attended a different school prior to enrolling at Glasshouse and felt that the move was due to his own shortcomings rather than anything related to his old school. His dad brought him to Glasshouse for his first day, where he began to fidget. He introduced his son to his teacher, Calypso, who suggested that Jack play with a Red Kelpie named Rusty. Upon learning that Rusty was going to play a game of army, and hearing what it involved, Jack initially believed he wouldn't be good at it. However, Rusty soon determined that Jack could perform to his own satisfaction, and to Jack's delight he was invited to participate. Jack greatly enjoyed the game and his new friendship, finding that there were aspects of pretending to be a soldier that he liked.

It's Guest's first day at Heeler High School! So far, everything has been going rather smoothly. She's been finding her classes well and is now sitting in the cafeteria, eating her lunch!
From across the cafeteria, Mackenzie is sitting with his two close best friends, Rusty and Jack, talking about upcoming football tryouts. Casually speaking to the two other teenage boys, "Yeah, I think I'm finally gonna try out this year."
"That's great, man!"
"Yeah! Maybe you can try out for the Quarterback slot," Rusty adds on to the conversation, speaking through a spoonful of cheesy mashed potatoes.
"Super off topic, but- Have you guys seen the new girl?" Jack curiously asks his best friends, glancing over his shoulder to see Guest sitting alone in the corner of the cafeteria, "She looks kind of lonely..."
