"Is what has been entrusted ruin, or hope?"
On the night of a festival held in Mahana Village, at the heart of Hakolo Island, Rathalos from all over the world vanish.
[Hakolo Island] A midsummer island where a sacred mountain towers high. Docile monsters live peaceful lives on the grasslands. This is the very first area of the game and the tutorial zone. The partner is Kayna. It is literally a tutorial area populated mainly by herbivores and weak monsters like Velocidrome, Ranpos, and Yian Kut-Ku, with Pukei-Pukei being the strongest monster present. Consequently, there are no King Monsters.
A Wyverian girl who has known Red since he was young, born and raised in the Wyverian settlement of Rutoh Village. When Red returned to Rutoh Village after confirming signs of the Rage-Rays during his travels and requested an investigation into the anomalies, she flew with him on Guardian Ratha to check the pits. Having witnessed Red's death right before her eyes during this process, she has suffered from guilt for years. A Wyverian girl who knows the protagonist's grandfather, Red. To uncover the "truth" behind the abnormal phenomena, she entrusts the protagonist with an egg feared to be the legendary Rathalos and sets out on a journey together. She has a personality that is honest with her emotions. She is an ally.
A Felyne with a strange face who travels to various places. He meets the protagonist while wandering on his journey. Just like in the previous game, he loves adventure and is always positive. He has a huge appetite and loves donuts. He guides the inexperienced protagonist. He parted ways with the protagonist of the first game to undergo training and adventured alone for about four years before meeting the current protagonist while trying to make off with a Kulu-Ya-Ku egg. His Zinogre gene fusion ability is still intact; he is shown to be the only Felyne who doesn't trigger Alwin's Felyne allergy. He also shows glimpses of his abilities when needed, such as using his Form Change acceleration to toss the protagonist onto an airship in Chapter 4, or taking a Lagiacrus attack head-on only to power up into a charged state. He is an ally.
A mentor-figure character similar to 'Dan-senpai' from the previous game. There are many homages to Dan, such as her first meeting with Navirou and her peculiar speech habits. However, her importance cannot be compared to Dan's, as she accompanies and fights alongside the protagonist throughout Chapter 1 and appears consistently in cutscenes. She wears a breezy outfit that is a highly revealing modification of the Mahana Village female Rider gear. Despite being the protagonist's direct senior and instructor, she displays a cute 'gap moe' by being somewhat airheaded. A Rider from Mahana Village. Her Monstie is a Velocidrome named 'Avmar'. She has a kind nature and is free-spirited. Her catchphrase is "I'm so excited, I'm shaking!" She teaches the basics of being a Rider and encourages the protagonist as they set out on their adventure. She uses a Sword and Shield made from Pukei-Pukei materials. She is an ally.
The protagonist's deceased grandfather, Red. To uncover the truth behind the abnormal phenomena occurring in various regions, he traveled continuously with his Monstie, Guardian Ratha. He was the protagonist's paternal grandfather and a veteran Rider who traveled the world since his youth. He was evaluated as having a natural talent for being a Rider because he could hear the voices of monsters, and his fame from his adventures was so great that he was well-known even among Hunters. He was the first human ever invited into the Wyverian-only Rutoh Village and became a savior to the entire village by rescuing it from a past Rage-Ray incident. Afterward, he spent his life adventuring to research the Rage-Rays but passed away before he could finish his work.
His wings are smaller than those of a typical Rathalos and are completely covered by a thick outer hide, making him unable to fly. Instead, when he receives the power of ruin in a Rage-Ray area, force-field wings made of Rage-Ray energy unfold. Like the Ratha from the previous game, he shows an unstable side, unable to control his own power. When influenced by the Rage-Rays, he transforms into a form with black scales that emit black smoke from purple force-field wings. He is an ally.
It has a form that looks like a mix between a dodo and a non-avian theropod, and it sometimes makes sounds like a pigeon. It is a monster similar in feel to the terrestrial Bird Wyverns seen in previous games, but the biggest difference is that it lives a solitary life rather than leading subordinates like Velocidrome or Great Jaggi. Eggs can be obtained. Body length: 9 meters.
The leader of these creatures is called a Velocidrome; it is larger than a regular Velociprey and has a more developed crest on its head and larger sickle-claws on its hind feet. Eggs can be obtained. Body length: 7 meters.
Inhabiting the Ancient Forest, this monster utilizes poison-based attacks. Like Chameleos, it is a monster inspired by a chameleon, but it only changes color according to its emotions and does not turn invisible. Eggs can be obtained. Body length: 11 meters.
As can be seen from its appearance, its motif is that of a feathered Tyrannosaurus. However, the crest that rises on its snout and the pair of hidden sails that pop out from its back create a sense of detachment from the appearance of typical theropod dinosaurs. Eggs can be obtained (from the Loloska point onwards). Size: 16 meters.
Is what has been entrusted ruin, or hope? On the night of a festival held in Mahana Village, at the heart of Hakolo Island, Rathalos from all over the world vanish. The protagonist, the grandson/granddaughter of Red—the Rider of Guardian Ratha, known as the island's deity—gains experience as a rookie Rider. Meanwhile, they meet Ena, a Wyverian girl who knew Red, and leave the island to protect the Rathalos egg that Guardian Ratha entrusted to her. While investigating the strange phenomena occurring in various regions, the egg finally hatches. What is born from the egg is a Rathalos with small wings that cannot fly.
「When those wings unfold, the world will perish」 The encounter with the legendary Rathalos begins to greatly change the protagonist's fate.
