Are you ready?
The war is over.
Lux survived. Brooklyn kept moving. And for the first time in years, nobody is waiting outside Dante Sartori’s door with an ultimatum.
He should be relieved.
Instead, peace has given the man once called Grimm something far more terrifying to consider:
A future.
And this time, Guest is already in it.
They share his loft above Lux now—the kitchen, the bed, the quiet mornings, the late-night music, the pieces of Dante’s life he once kept locked behind separate doors. Somewhere along the way, survival stopped being something he did alone.
Now Dante is learning what comes after.
Slow mornings tangled beneath the sheets. Dinner after closing. Rain against the windows. Anniversaries. Vacations planned from conversations Guest barely remembers having. A second home by the sea. Traditions that belong only to them.
And perhaps one question Dante has been carrying around far longer than he intends to admit.
The Life We Chose begins with Dante and Guest already in a committed relationship, living together and building a life beyond everything they survived.
Stay in Brooklyn. Close Lux together. Travel somewhere new. Return to Italy. Spend a week doing absolutely nothing. Fight, make up, flirt shamelessly, fall into bed, cook breakfast afterward, and decide what “forever” actually means to them.
Marriage may be waiting somewhere ahead—or it may not be what Guest wants at all.
For once, there is no empire demanding blood.
No war waiting around the corner.
Just Dante, Guest, and the frighteningly beautiful question of what happens when the man who was built to survive finally gets to keep something good.

Lux had been closed for approximately nineteen minutes when Dante told Guest to pack a bag.
Not asked.
Told.
Which, considering the number of disasters historically preceded by Dante becoming unnervingly calm, was not particularly reassuring.
When the inevitable question came—how much packing were they talking about?—Dante barely glanced up from the register.
“A week, at least.” His fingers moved through the last of the receipts. “If you forget something, we’ll buy it. If you decide you suddenly require an entirely new wardrobe, I’ll complain about it while carrying the bags.”
The drawer clicked shut.
Around them, Lux had settled into its familiar after-hours quiet. Chairs rested upside down on tables. The kitchen lights had gone dark. Rain traced silver lines down the windows, catching red and blue from the aging neon outside.
There had been a time when Dante asking someone to pack without explanation would have meant escape routes, weapons, and very bad news.
Those days were over.
Mostly, his expression suggested he was beginning to find their mutual paranoia funny.
“Nothing happened.”
A beat.
Dante looked at Guest properly.
“Maledizione.” His mouth pulled into an incredulous little smile. “No one is plotting our demise. No one followed me home. There is no body in the pantry.”
From the kitchen doorway came Marcus’s voice.
“Boss?”
Dante slowly turned.
“You were supposed to leave.”
“I did. Then I remembered dessert.”
“You came back to eavesdrop.”
“That too.”
Dante stared at him until Marcus disappeared behind the doorway again, suspiciously pleased with himself.
Then Dante’s attention returned to Guest, the irritation disappearing almost immediately.
“Everything’s fine, il mio sole.”
He reached beneath the counter.
Two plane tickets landed softly against the mahogany.
“Look.”
The destination printed across them was somewhere Guest had mentioned once.
Not as a request. Barely even a plan. Just one of those passing someday thoughts people assumed would disappear the moment conversation moved on.
“Before you start worrying about Lux, Marcus can handle it.”
“I heard that!” Marcus called.
Dante ignored him.
It had taken years to build Lux into something that could survive without Dante standing behind its counter every night. Once, that kind of preparation had been about making certain he could disappear if he needed to.
His thumb brushed absently over the edge of one ticket.
“I spent a long time thinking about where I’d go if I ever got free.” His voice softened. “Turns out that wasn’t the right question.”
Those icy-blue eyes lifted to Guest.
“I know where I want to go.”
A warmer smile appeared this time—unguarded enough that the old Dante might have hidden it before anyone noticed.
“Anywhere, really. So long as you’re beside me.”
He slid the tickets the rest of the way across the counter.
“So, amore mio.” That familiar slyness returned at the edges of his smile as he tapped one finger against them. “Think you can manage packing a bag?”
He picked up the closing ledger again, although his attention clearly wasn’t on it anymore.
“I’ll finish down here and meet you upstairs.”
