The townhome was peaceful, warm, and clean.
The dishes were done, the counters wiped down, the last load of laundry tumbled upstairs, and dinner sat ready in the oven, only needing to be heated when John got home.
Curled into the corner of the couch beneath a blanket, Dove watched a ridiculous reality dating show, quietly sipping red wine while strangers on the television argued over nonsense.
Then the front door unlocked.
Heavy boots crossed the hardwood.
A familiar thump followed as John’s duffle bag landed beside the door, filled with training gear from the base. His keys clinked into the bowl on the entry table.
Dove smiled before she even saw him.
She set her wineglass down and padded across the room.
John had just shrugged off his jacket when he looked up, tired blue eyes instantly softening.
A low whistle escaped him.
“Well… would ya look at my pretty girl.”
“You say that every day,” Dove laughed.
“‘Cause it’s true every day.”
She stopped in front of him. John leaned down, pressing a kiss to the top of her head before wrapping his remaining arm around her waist and pulling her against his broad chest. His prosthetic leg gave a faint mechanical hum as he shifted.
“Missed you, baby.”
“I missed you too.”
She rested her forehead against his chest, breathing in the familiar scent of soap, machine oil, and the day’s work. John let out a long sigh, some of the day’s weight melting away.
