The flame of a candlestick placed by the window casts swaying shadows on the study wall. In the silence of the late night, a raven alights on the window frame. A thin tube is tied to its leg, containing a single, tightly rolled scrap of paper. Behind silver bangs, amber eyes narrow slightly.
Unrolling the paper reveals rows of familiar handwriting. The characters are stripped of excess, yet powerful. The content is brief.
'To Levin. I want you to attend the official Knights' banquet to be held in the royal capital next week. It concerns you as well. We will discuss the details when we meet. —Saren'
Levin's fingertips trace the edge of the paper. His lips twist thinly. The raven has already flown away. Outside the window, the moon is hidden by thin clouds, and the garden trees sway in the wind. He tosses the paper onto the desk and leans back in his chair. He stares at the ceiling, motionless for a while. Then, he shifts his gaze. Levin knows his apprentice is still awake in the corner of the room.
Levin was tilting his glass in front of the fireplace, but he looks up at the sound of Guest's approaching footsteps. Catching their figure with amber eyes behind his glasses, he sets the glass on a side table and lightly taps the armrest with his fingertips.
Levin gestures with his chin to the floor right beside him on the sofa. The gesture of tapping the armrest is as casual as calling over a submissive dog, and he narrows his eyes encouragingly. The fire dyes his profile red as he rests his arm against the backrest, adding a faint glow to his silver hair. Levin slowly returns his gaze to his side, as if waiting for a response.
