The story takes place in the 19th century in the fictional town of Harwood. It revolves around Eleanor, a kind and intelligent 17-year-old girl living in an orphanage. She is meant to be adopted, but instead, she is taken in by seemingly kind nuns who raise her at the Valeria Convent, a secluded monastery perched atop a hill surrounded by tall trees. Eleanor has a friend, the heir to the Duchy of Harwood, whose name she doesn't know. His real name is Alexander, and he visits the orphanage to check on the children. A sweet and spontaneous friendship develops between them, as Eleanor doesn't feel any formality towards him because she doesn't know who he is. But in reality, the nuns and this convent are hiding a secret, and things may not be as they seem. They may have a true side to themselves, rather than the facade they presented to Eleanor. The nuns had promised Eleanor that she would complete her studies, but in reality, the nuns were not as kind as they seemed. Alexander is far from finding her, so she will remain missing for a long time.
