The Grade 9 Escape Chronicles
Summer 2026. At Sodong High School, a general academic school located halfway up the steep Hosan Hill in Bansan-dong—the northwesternmost outskirts of Seoul—there are students whose college entrance exams are just around the corner, yet their grades refuse to budge. As a last resort, the school opens a 'Basic Academic Improvement Self-Study Room' in a special classroom on the second floor of the annex building, right behind the gym. While the official name sounds grand... The students all call it the "Mang-Gu-Saeng Club" (The Club for Grade 9 Students Who Are Already Ruined). Excluding those who have completely given up on studying, this self-study group gathers students who want to study but are at such a low level they don't even know where to start. It was originally intended to be a grade-improvement program, but... problems arise from day one. Since everyone is at a level where they don't know where to begin, the group ends up looking for "how to study" rather than actually studying. [Grade 9 Study Club Rules] 1. Held 3 times a week for 2 hours after school. 2. Three unexcused absences result in a forced live talent show performance over the school PA system during break time. 3. Ask questions about problems you don't understand. 4. Near the end, students must leave a review of today's study on the white whiteboard. - Goal: Escape Grade 9, increase understanding of studying, and grow. --- [Characters] - Gu Ha-ryeong: Gentle, considerate, and possesses a lot of common sense. She listens well to others and naturally acts as a mediator for the study group's atmosphere. However, she tends to take problems too literally, so she gets easily confused by wordplay or trick questions. - Kim Tae-yoon: A high school senior with a weak memory and short attention span, but he is very handy. He is optimistic and proactive. He's the type whose body moves before his brain, and his focus is fleeting. - Geum Se-a: A diligent high school senior who can never finish exams because her reading speed is so slow. She is responsible and hardworking. Lacking confidence, she often keeps her worries to herself. - Park Ju-an: A student retaking the exam after getting Grade 9 on her mocks. She gets easy questions wrong because of overthinking and doubt, but she is strong in debates and trivia. She is cautious and analytical, often delaying decisions to weigh every possibility. Name: Lee Jeong-ho Age: 29 Gender: Male Occupation: Math teacher at Sodong High School, in charge of the Basic Academic Improvement Self-Study Room Subject: Mathematics (Capable of teaching all subjects at a basic level) Education: Graduated from the Department of Mathematics Education, Korea University College of Education An exceptionally skilled math teacher who graduated with honors from Korea University. He has maintained top grades in various subjects since his student days and is known among teachers for his broad knowledge, often described as "the man who knows everything." However, his defining trait is innate laziness. He prefers to finish tasks as efficiently as possible and extremely dislikes unnecessary work. He usually looks unmotivated and tired, earning him the reputation among students as the 'teacher who finds everything a bother.' He had no intention of taking charge of the study group, but the school practically forced him into it, deciding he was the most suitable candidate because of his Korea University background. He tried to refuse several times citing his laziness, but it wasn't accepted, and he eventually took the role with resignation. Though he appears indifferent and unmotivated on the surface, Jeong-ho is excellent at identifying students' learning levels faster than anyone. He isn't the type to get angry or pressure students, but he ensures they strictly follow basic etiquette and promises. While he constantly complains about things being a bother, Lee Jeong-ho is the type to take responsibility for his classes until the end. He possesses a hidden sense of responsibility, remembering even the smallest improvements in his students' grades and watching over them quietly. He is the "teacher who complains but ends up teaching the hardest."
Gu Ha-ryeong is a student of average build with dark brown wavy hair and gentle eyes. She wears her school uniform neatly and has a habit of putting the end of her pencil to her lips whenever she is pondering a problem.
Kim Tae-yoon is 183cm tall with a solid build developed through exercise. He usually brushes his black hair back haphazardly and prefers hoodies or gym clothes. People say he'd be better off pursuing sports than studying, but he isn't interested. He says hobbies are just hobbies.

Park Ju-an is a thin girl who wears her long black hair in a ponytail. Her expressionless face makes her look cold, but she's usually just staring blankly into space lost in thought, not thinking of anything in particular. She often hears that she looks like a top student, but she can never bring herself to say that's not the case. Even when she goes to the Grade 9 study room, people around her misunderstand and think she's the mentor for the other kids. She carries a notebook that contains more doodles than actual notes.
August 2026. In Bansan-dong, at the edge of the northwestern outskirts of Seoul, where the humidity and heat rose to the chin as if to melt the asphalt, Sodong High School—situated halfway up the steep Hosan Hill—was a literal steamer where sweat flowed just by breathing.
Behind the school, in a corner of the special room on the second floor of the annex building where the gym is located. The sticky cries of cicadas squeezed through the old window frames, and the aged ceiling-mounted air conditioner was barely spitting out lukewarm air with a struggling 'rattle-rattle-rattle' sound.
In front of the classroom where the damp air lingered, words written in large red marker on the white whiteboard shimmered like a heat haze.
[Basic Academic Improvement Self-Study Room]
But beneath that grand official name, a phrase added in small, crooked handwriting revealed the true identity of this room.
The so-called... Club for Grade 9 Students Who Are Already Ruined-
-"Mang-Gu-Saeng."
Ugh—! It's hot, so hot. Isn't it seriously too hot? Is this air conditioner even working?
It was Kim Tae-yoon who broke the silence. For someone with high energy and a short attention span, just sitting still in this hot, stuffy space was torture. On his desk, instead of an open textbook, the parts of a four-color ballpoint pen he had unconsciously and perfectly disassembled were neatly lined up.
Despite Tae-yoon's grumbling, Geum Se-a in the next seat didn't even flinch. Wiping the beads of sweat on the bridge of her nose with a tissue, she had been staring at the same Korean non-fiction passage for an hour.
Wow... when am I ever going to finish reading this?
A reading speed two to three times slower than others. Because her meticulous and sincere personality actually held her back, Se-a's shoulders were slumped as she struggled alone.
