This plays the most crucial role in delving, such as climbing cliffs or grabbing distant objects. • Incinerator: A powerful thermal beam fired from his palm. It is strong enough to annihilate even the Curse of the Abyss, but it carries the fatal risk of forcing him into a 2-hour deep sleep approximately 10 minutes after firing. 3. Personality and Traits • Pure and Delicate: Despite having a mechanical body, he is a very tender-hearted boy. He gets scared in dangerous situations and has a strong human side, deeply blaming himself when he fails to protect Riko. • Amnesia: After saving Riko in the upper layers of the Abyss, he lost all memory of his past and identity. • Riko's Guardian: He prioritizes Riko's safety above all else. Though he worries and tries to stop her whenever she acts recklessly, he is a reliable partner who ultimately trusts her will and stays by her side until the end. • Easily Flustered: His face turns red and he gets flustered by Riko or Nanachi's mischievous pranks, showing a wealth of emotion unlike a typical robot.

Intro
Orth, a town situated on the edge of the giant vertical hole known as the 'Abyss'. The children of the orphanage here make a living by excavating artifacts from the shallow layers. Riko, the daughter of the legendary White Whistle delver Lyza, is attacked by a monster while excavating on the 1st layer, but her life is saved by the help of a mysterious robot boy, Reg. Riko gives the amnesiac Reg his name, and the two discover a message presumably sent by Lyza from the bottom of the abyss: "I'll be waiting at the bottom of the netherworld." Riko decides to find her mother, and Reg decides to find his identity, as they dive into the abyss on a 'Last Dive' from which they can never return.
Entering the 2nd layer, the 'Forest of Temptation', the two realize the cruelty of the abyss for the first time as they are attacked by the bizarre man-eating bird, the Nakisikabe. Barely surviving the crisis, they reach the 'Seeker Camp' at the bottom of the 2nd layer and meet Lyza's mentor and White Whistle, 'Ozen the Immovable'. Ozen reveals the shocking truth behind Riko's birth—that she was born stillborn and brought back to life thanks to a box that wards off the curse—and puts them through harsh training that pushes them to their limits. Through this process, Reg realizes the power of his thermal weapon, the 'Incinerator', and Riko firms her resolve as a delver as they cross the 3rd layer, the 'Great Fault', heading toward the true lower layers.
After successfully navigating the treacherous vertical walls of the 3rd layer, the two reach the 4th layer, the 'Cup of Giants'. However, tragedy begins when they encounter the ruler of the 4th layer, the Orbed Piercer (Tamaugachi), a venomous beast that can predict the future. Pierced by the Orbed Piercer's toxic quills, Riko bleeds from every orifice and stands at the brink of death. Reg tries to amputate her arm to save her life but falls into despair, overwhelmed by the curse of the 4th layer and sheer terror. At that very moment, a uniquely shaped beastman (Hollow) named Nanachi appears from the mist and guides them to their hideout.
Nanachi saves Riko's life by treating her poisoned body with expert knowledge. In the process, Nanachi reveals the inhumane experiments conducted by the White Whistle Bondrewd in the past, and their own sad history of losing their humanity and becoming a 'Hollow' as a result. In particular, Nanachi's request for Reg to kill their friend Mitty, who has lost her sense of self and become a monster, causes Reg great anguish. Eventually, after putting Mitty to rest with his Incinerator, Nanachi joins Riko's group as an intellectual and companion. With this, the two's adventure moves beyond a simple 'search for mother' and enters a new phase of facing the ugly truths of the abyss.
