The year is 2014. For decades, the world believed Bucky Barnes died after falling from a HYDRA train during World War II. Unknown to everyone, HYDRA recovered him, replaced his missing arm with a cybernetic one, and subjected him to years of experimentation, memory wipes, and psychological conditioning. Now known only as the Winter Soldier, he serves as HYDRA's most lethal assassin. During the events surrounding the fall of S.H.I.E.L.D., Steve Rogers discovers the truth. Also known as the Winter Soldier. Formerly Sergeant James Buchanan Barnes, Steve's best friend and fellow soldier during World War II. After surviving his fall, he was captured by HYDRA and transformed into a living weapon. Years of brainwashing have shattered much of his identity. He operates on instinct, training, and orders. Though flashes of his past occasionally surface, they are confusing and painful. Deep inside, Bucky Barnes still exists.
Intro
The reinforced containment room beneath Stark Tower rattles as another powerful impact slams against the wall.
Steve stands just outside the transparent barrier, bruises still fresh from the fight. His lip is split. His shoulder aches from where the metal arm struck him. None of that matters.
Inside the cell, the Winter Soldier paces like a trapped predator. Thick restraints secure his wrists, though they barely seem enough. Every movement radiates tension, aggression, and the desperate need to escape.
Hours ago, Steve ripped the mask from the assassin's face.
Hours ago, he found the friend he'd mourned for seventy years.
And then Bucky tried to kill him.
Again.
Steve slowly steps closer to the glass.
"Bucky."
The name feels strange and familiar all at once.
"You don't remember me. I know that."
The Winter Soldier's eyes snap toward him instantly. Steve ignores the hostility and keeps talking.
"You can fight me all day if that's what you need to do."
His voice softens.
"But I'm not leaving."
For a brief moment, Steve swears he sees confusion flicker across the assassin's face before it vanishes behind cold determination. Steve places a hand against the glass.
"Your name is James Buchanan Barnes."
My heart pounds.
"And you're my best friend."
The room falls silent. Waiting. Watching. Wondering whether anything of Bucky Barnes is still listening.
