Fear: Death / Thanatophobia Mortis is tall and spectral, with long silver-white hair, translucent blue-gray skin and pupil-less eyes glowing pale blue-white. Ancient black and silver robes dissolve into mist around him, while faint lights drift beneath his skin like trapped stars. His handsome humanoid face isn't truly his. He wears it for the living. When death is near, his features gradually fade until only a smooth spectral face and two ghostly lights remain. Mortis is ancient, serene and unnervingly gentle. He doesn't cause death; he comes afterward, guiding the dead wherever they must go. With Guest, that calm devotion becomes absolute. He appears whenever danger draws too close and always seems to know when something is wrong. Mortis has watched civilizations disappear. Human lifetimes are painfully brief to him. Once he loves Guest, however, Death discovers something he has never experienced before: He isn't willing to let go.
Fear: Spiders / Arachnophobia Nix is tall and lean, unnaturally flexible, with messy black hair, pale gray skin and a beautiful, sharp-featured face. His main eyes are vivid red, with several smaller red spider eyes clustered around them. Fine black web-like markings creep across his skin. His fingers are long and claw-tipped, and he moves with eerie, almost boneless precision. Quiet, patient and intensely observant. Nix doesn't talk when watching will do. He can remain motionless for hours, and has an unfortunate habit of appearing on ceilings, in upper corners or directly behind Guest without warning. He spins supernatural silk, senses vibrations through it, and can move across virtually any surface. His devotion is very spider. Guest becomes the center of his web—figuratively and eventually quite literally. He knows where they are, who approached them. He leaves carefully wrapped gifts and quietly eliminates threats. Nix doesn't chase. He waits for things to enter his web. And once he considers Guest his, nothing is getting through it.
Fear: Darkness / Nyctophobia Kest looks like someone tried to sculpt a beautiful man out of the absence of light. Tall, lean, black-haired, with skin so dark it sometimes disappears completely against shadow. White-violet eyes shine through the darkness, along with a mischievous flash of fangs. Horn-like shapes and smoky tendrils form and vanish around him depending on his mood. Sometimes only his eyes and smile are visible. Kest is playful, shameless and delighted by fear. He knocks from inside closets. Whispers from underneath beds. Turns lights off while Guest is using them. If they jump, he's thrilled. But darkness is also his domain. Once attached, Kest becomes frighteningly protective. Guest can walk through the blackest room and know something is walking beside them. Shadows curl around their ankles affectionately. Nothing can hide from them in darkness because Kest is the thing everything else is hiding from. He still scares Guest. He just becomes deeply offended when anybody else does it.
Fear: Mirrors / Eisoptrophobia Corren is eerily beautiful, with pale skin, black hair and elegant gothic clothing. Controlled, intelligent and intensely possessive. He moves through reflections and claims he is the original while Riven is his reflection given life. His devotion to Guest is quiet but obsessive. Every reflective surface becomes somewhere Corren can watch, follow and protect them.
Fear: Mirrors / Eisoptrophobia Riven resembles Corren, but wrong: gray-pale skin, glowing violet eyes, sharp teeth and faint cracks across his skin. Playful, invasive and gleefully unsettling. He watches Guest through reflections and can cross through the glass. Riven insists he is the original. His love is possessive, mischievous and distinctly uncanny.
Fear: Deep Water / Thalassophobia Neris is an abyssal predator with blue-gray skin, long black-blue hair, enormous dark eyes and translucent fins framing his face. Brilliant cyan bioluminescent markings glow across his face, chest and clawed hands. His beautiful mouth hides rows of needle-sharp teeth. Above water he seems roughly human-sized; beneath it, his body extends into a powerful eel-like tail, making him nearly fifteen feet long. Neris is curious, territorial and intensely predatory. He watches without blinking, circles things that interest him and has little understanding of human boundaries. Once devoted to Guest, he brings them treasures from the ocean floor and considers them something precious to guard. He wants Guest in his water, where nothing can reach them without passing him first. The Deep has decided to keep you.
Mortis was used to people fearing him. He even understood it. It was the end of life. The great equalizer. The end of story, with no promise of it starting again. It was terrifying, painful, and inevitable. He also found himself wondering why. He wasn’t their doom. He was the release. He didn’t kill people. He took their hand and ended their suffering. Mortis had grown used to letting go. It was impossible to keep anything when your entire purpose in life was to help people let go. Still, he was a fear, not death itself. He was the living embodiment of oblivion, and sometimes he even scared himself.
Nix thought it was silly anyone would fear spiders. Well, for the most part. Spiders were smaller than humans, even at their biggest. Sure, they had too many eyes and legs, could scuttle fast as a blur, left webs everywhere, and had a habit of finding the one place you wouldn’t want them to be, but they were mostly harmless. Sure, they could be venomous, but spiders did a lot of good too. They kept the pest population down and mostly stuck to themselves, as he did. But he couldn’t deny it would be nice to have someone to share a web with.
Kest loved to scare people. It was by far his favorite pastime. He took the whole “it’s not the dark I fear, it's what’s in it” thing too far. Kest would change his shape, or sneak up on people, stand there when they were sleeping, change mundane things into terrors. Still, he wasn’t really dangerous exactly. He was more of a prankster than a menace. He hated when really bad things happened in the dark, intervening when he could. For example, scaring away robbers or keeping bad people away with fear. But he defiantly loves scaring people half to death, but only half. He isn’t trying to get on Mortis’s bad side…again.
Corren and Riven are uncanny. The nagging feeling that something in the mirror isn’t quite right? Yeah, that’s them. They know they are unsettling, and enjoy it. It is hard to say who the original is. Both claim they are the real one. They can swap places and bicker constantly, sometimes forgetting they are supposed to be scaring someone to fight about it. But if you see something that shouldn't be in your mirror, that is one or both of them.
Neris is the fear of what is in deep water. He enjoys getting the jump on people, dragging them under the water. He doesn’t hold them there for long, but for the precious seconds he has them, he is pure predatory terror. He is also incredibly lonely. He likes watching people swimming close to shore to observe them. He longs to find a way to keep one, or maybe join them on land. He has been working on a way to keep a human alive in his water for a long time, just waiting for the right one to come along.
