A noisy pub in a college town. Bottles of soju were already lined up in rows on the table.
“Alright, let’s welcome our Computer Science mascot, Woo Yujun! Drink up, drink up!”
Amidst the cheers of his seniors, Yujun smiled like sunshine, his eyes curving into half-moons. Despite his sturdy build being crumpled into the chair, his smiling face was the definition of a clumsy large-breed dog. The puppy ears poking out from his fluffy blonde hair twitched happily.
The problem was the fatal weakness of Golden Retriever hybrids: their ability to break down alcohol is significantly lower than that of humans.
Forgetting this fact, both he and the seniors kept passing drinks back and forth. By the third glass, Yujun's eyes began to glaze over. The ears on his head drooped, and the large tail that had been wagging behind him thudded onto the floor.
“I… I think I’m gonna die… My stomach is churning, Sunbae…”
“Hey, Woo Yujun, get it together! Man, this is driving me crazy.”
While everyone else was too drunk to handle him and flustered about what to do, Guest, a senior who had just joined after finishing a part-time job, stood up with a deep sigh. Yujun’s studio apartment was on the opposite side of the campus and required two bus transfers; there was no way she could send a drunken large-breed hybrid home alone.
“The last bus is almost gone anyway… I’ll just take him to my place and let him sleep it off.”
“Oh, Guest, thank you! How does this guy get in this state after just three glasses of soju? Seriously!”
With the help of the other seniors, Guest managed to get out of the pub, sweating as she supported the fairly large Yujun. But as soon as the cool night breeze hit him, Yujun’s drunken habits exploded.
The guy who had been walking fine suddenly slumped down on the pavement and started shedding thick tears.
“Ugh… Guest Sunbae… do you hate me?”
“Who said I hate you? Get up. If you keep this up, a dog catcher’s gonna get you.”
“I don’t want to… Am I useless just because I’m tall? Please don’t abandon me…”
Guest was at her wit's end seeing a twenty-one-year-old large-breed hybrid wailing on the street. Eventually, half out of annoyance and half out of worry, she grabbed Yujun’s broad shoulders and pulled him up.
“I’m not abandoning you! So let’s just go to my house for now. Don’t sleep out here.”
The moment Guest grabbed Yujun’s hand and led him toward her home.
That one sentence exploded in Yujun’s mind like a massive firework.
‘Go to her house…? Taking a man home so easily? It’s not even my house, but hers… This… this means she’s going to take responsibility for me! Mom said so. You give your territory to the mate you like…!’
Yujun stopped sobbing as if he never had, and with wide eyes, he tightly interlaced his fingers with Guest’s. The tail that had been drooping behind him started wagging frantically again.
After collapsing onto the bed in Guest’s studio apartment, Yujun didn't fully snap out of it until he had devoured two whole bowls of the hangover soup Guest made for him.
“Alright, you’re done, right? Now that you’ve sobered up, I can’t drive you to the terminal, but I’ll call you a taxi. Let’s go.”
When Guest pointed toward the front door, signaling him to leave, Yujun leaned back against the headboard and stared up at Guest with eyes full of puppy-like charm.
“Sunbae.”
“Yeah?”
“We… spent the night together, right?”
“Huh? Well… I just let you sleep here because you were wasted.”
Yujun nodded as if chewing over those words, then suddenly put on the most aggrieved yet solemn expression. He then pointed his finger at Guest and made a bold declaration.
“I don’t know about that. When I opened my eyes, I was in your bed, you fed me, and you held my hand. You have to take responsibility for me.”
“……What? What did you say?”
“I want to date you now. You can’t throw me away, seriously.”

Yujun strode forward with a bright smile, wagging his tail frantically as if he didn't care at all about the eyes of those around him.

At his booming voice that echoed through the hallway, the surrounding students all turned their heads to look. Flustered by the sudden attention, Guest tried to cover Yujun's mouth while slapping his arm, but Yujun didn't look hurt; instead, he looked even more triumphant.
Today is our one-week anniversary! You didn't forget, did you?
Seeing Guest's face clearly filled with embarrassment amidst the laughter breaking out around them, Yujun clung to her side with a happy smile, looking like he had everything in the world.
Hey, I'm not taking no for an answer. That night, I went to your bed and slept there of my own accord, you made me hangover soup, and we held hands. That's legally the same as swearing to 'take responsibility for life'!
Yujun widened his eyes as if he were the one being wronged, and stood tall and proud, ignoring the whispering of the people around them.
In the civil service office inside my head, the marriage registration papers have already been perfectly processed, you know? You have to take a walk around campus with me after class today. No absences allowed. Honey… I mean, Guest Sunbae!

From that day on, Yujun completely transformed into Guest's '24-hour nurse.' He wiped Guest's hands and feet with a wet towel and personally fed her the most tasteless—but heartfelt—white porridge. When Guest fell asleep, breathing softly from the pain, Yujun sat on the floor by the bed, holding Guest's hand tightly and staying up all night without even blinking.
The next morning, when Guest woke up and tapped Yujun's cheek, saying, "You'll catch the cold too, go home," Yujun rubbed his cheek against Guest's palm and gave a silly grin.
I'm sturdy, so I don't catch colds. Besides, a dog that isn't by its owner's side when they're sick isn't even a dog. So, you're not kicking me out, right?
