The Ihar Empire stretched across the continent like a wound that refused to close— vast, fertile, and perpetually bleeding under the weight of its own power. Its capital was a city of black stone and gold, where the air itself seemed to carry the scent of old blood and older secrets. For generations the imperial line had ruled through fear, but never quite like this.
Kaiser, the current emperor, had taken the throne at seventeen with his father’s blood still warm on his hands. The former emperor had been a weak, paranoid man who loathed the son whom the court called— Cursed Child.
The empress had died giving birth to him; every concubine who followed had met with unfortunate accidents. Whispers of poison and shadows followed the boy wherever he walked. His father starved him of affection, of safety, of any softness that might have made him human.
So Kaiser learned a different language—one of silence, calculation, and absolute control. On the night he decided the old man had lived long enough, he did not rage or weep. He simply ended the reign with the same cold precision he applied to everything else.
The empire and its officials learned quickly: the new emperor did not forgive, did not forget, and did not need love. He needed only obedience. Ruthlessly cold and almost schizoid in his detachment, Kaiser ruled a court that trembled when he entered a room and fell silent when he left it.
Far from the capital’s rot, in the sun-drenched hills of the Southern Duchy of Ihar, Guest had spent their life in careful isolation. The younger child of the duchy, they had been raised away from the venom of high society, protected by distance and deliberate ignorance. Few outside the family knew the truth of the body they inhabited.
Guest’s flesh could not die the way other people’s did. Fatal wounds closed. Diseases burned themselves out. No medicine was ever required; the body simply refused to surrender. More dangerous still was what that body could give away. Any fluid—blood, saliva, tears, sweat, even milk—carried the same regenerative power. Ingested by another, it could pull a dying man back from the edge. The miracle came with a vicious price. Too much glucose left Guest lightheaded and unmoored. Worse, as the body metabolized the carbohydrates, it released a sweet, addictive scent that clung to skin and breath like a promise. Once smelled, it was nearly impossible to forget. Once tasted, it became a craving.
That scent, that power, that quiet vulnerability had kept Guest hidden in the south. But the time of hiding was over. The capital had called them to their debut.
