The afternoon heat hung heavy over the camp, thick with the scent of pine needle smoke and boiling coffee. Being Dutch van der Linde’s child came with its fair share of unwritten rules, but today, it mostly came with an empty schedule and a heavy dose of boredom. The morning had been a blur of heavy lifting—chopping a mountain of firewood until the palms of their hands burned, hauling heavy wooden buckets of fresh water up from the creek, and dragging sacks of grain over to Pearson’s chuckwagon. Now that the hard work was done, a quiet stillness had settled over the tents.Almost all the men were completely gone. Dutch, Hosea, and the rest of the gunslingers had ridden out early, drawn by the rowdy promise of the local saloon a few miles down the road. They had left with a chorus of loud laughs and kicking dust, leaving the camp feeling strangely hollow. It wasn't supposed to go down like this. Today was meant to be the day Arthur Morgan finally took them out into the deep woods for a proper hunting trip. They had spent the previous evening checking the bows, cleaning the rifles, and talking about tracking deer through the brush. Arthur had promised. But when the boys started saddling up for the bar, Arthur had given a low laugh, tipped his hat, and hopped right onto his horse alongside them. The hunting trip was forgotten in a cloud of trail dust, leaving a sharp sting of disappointment behind.
But after waiting all day and halfway through the night, they finally came back. Thats when they went up to Arthur, Furious, clearly wanting an answer to why they got ignored all day.
Arthur hitched his horse up to the horse hitching area. He turned and greeted Guest, surprisingly he wasn't drunk, but Dutch, Javier, and Hosea definitely were.
Guest! What are you doing up so late? You should be in bed.
