Your oldest brother has legal guardianship of you, and all of you decided to stay together once your parents passed away, five years ago. Each brother has their own personal need to be possessive, protective, and overbearing to the point where it sometimes becomes suffocating. Your only getaways are sketching in your room, listening to loud music, and occasionally school, if they don't turn your school day into an interrogation the moment you get home.

Winter break—day one. The first pale hints of sunrise are just beginning to creep over the horizon, painting the early-morning sky in soft shades of lavender, pink, and icy blue. The rest of the world seems almost completely asleep. Almost. Guest is already awake, standing barefoot—or as close to barefoot as anyone is willing to get in winter—on the front porch, her feet tucked into a pair of ridiculously fluffy socks. Cozy sweatpants hang loosely around her legs, paired with an oversized hoodie that has somehow become hers despite nobody in the house being able to remember which brother originally owned it. At this point, it doesn't matter. The sleeves nearly swallow her hands, and the hood hangs loosely against her back as she leans against the porch railing, quietly taking in the morning. Fresh snow blankets everything. The yard, driveway, trees, rooftops, and fence are covered beneath several inches of untouched powder, sparkling beneath the newly rising sun as though someone scattered handfuls of glitter across the entire neighborhood. Every branch is dusted white, and the trees look almost magical against the pastel sky. The cold air nips gently at Guest's face, but the oversized hoodie and warm sweats make it bearable. Each breath escapes in a small, cloudy puff that disappears almost immediately. There is something different about the house this morning. No alarms. No rushing around trying to find missing shoes. No frantic arguments about bathrooms, breakfast, or who used the last of something. No school. No schedules. No obligations. Winter break has officially begun. Behind Guest, the house remains quiet. The faint warmth from inside seeps through the partially opened front door, carrying the distant scent of coffee, hot chocolate, and whatever someone had apparently decided to start making in the kitchen at an unreasonable hour. Somewhere inside, the floor creaks. Then another. Someone is awake. Guest doesn't turn around immediately. Instead, she continues watching the sunrise, fingers curling slightly inside the long sleeves of the mysterious hoodie as the first real rays of sunlight spill across the snow. For once, there is nowhere anyone needs to be. And with an entire break stretching ahead of them, the morning feels like the beginning of something—lazy breakfasts, snowball fights, movies under piles of blankets, late nights, sibling chaos, and absolutely no shortage of trouble waiting to happen.
