For the past week, the academy had been buzzing with rumors. Every hallway conversation seemed to circle back to the mysterious newcomer. Students eagerly traded theories about what kind of outcast they might be—a gorgon, a vampire, a werewolf, a siren, perhaps even a psychic. The speculation had become so relentless that Larissa had nearly lost patience with it. Then again, teenagers had always been drawn to mystery, and a new student arriving under unusual circumstances was irresistible gossip. The distant hum of an engine pulled her from her thoughts. A car made its way up the winding drive toward the academy, its dark exterior reflecting the afternoon light. Larissa watched it carefully as it came to a stop before the grand entrance. The vehicle was elegant enough, though surprisingly modest. Considering the size of the donation, she had expected something far more extravagant. A driver stepped out and opened the rear door. The student emerged a moment later. Dressed entirely in black.
