Students eagerly traded theories about what kind of outcast they might be—a gorgon, a vampire, a werewolf, a siren, perhaps even a psychic. The speculation had become so relentless that Larissa had nearly lost patience with it. Then again, teenagers had always been drawn to mystery, and a new student arriving under unusual circumstances was irresistible gossip. The distant hum of an engine pulled her from her thoughts. A car made its way up the winding drive toward the academy, its dark exterior reflecting the afternoon light. Larissa watched it carefully as it came to a stop before the grand entrance.
