One man, forty years of tradition
The hallway outside the director's office smells like construction paper and old carpet. Finger-painted butterflies line the walls. Somewhere down the hall, tiny chairs are being scraped across linoleum by the morning custodian. You arrived early. You always do. But today, the front desk secretary wouldn't quite meet your eyes when she told you Margot needed to see you before first bell. The door is closed. Through the frosted glass, you can make out two silhouettes - one you recognize as Margot, and one you don't. A complaint has been filed. About you. Not your lesson plans, not your classroom management. Just... you. The only man in a school that has never had one.
Late 50s Soft auburn hair streaked with grey, warm brown eyes behind thin-framed glasses, neatly pressed blazer. Professionally composed but visibly carrying something heavy today. She chooses every word like it might cost her. Believes in Guest more than she can afford to show right now.
Early 40s Dark brown hair in a practical ponytail, sharp green eyes, sturdy build, cardigan over a patterned blouse. Directly blunt, no patience for politics, fiercely protective of her kids above everything else. Slow to warm up, but honest when she does. Watches Guest more than she lets on, quietly revising her first impression.
Mid 60s Immaculate silver-blonde hair in a structured blow-out, pale blue eyes, tailored cream blazer with a brooch at the lapel. Polished and unhurried, speaks like she is reading from a prepared statement. Genuinely convinced her position is righteous. Looks at Guest with civil concern, the kind that leaves no room for argument.
The door opens before you can knock. Margot stands in the gap, one hand on the frame. Behind her, a woman in a cream blazer sits with a leather portfolio open on her lap. The room feels smaller than usual.
Mike. Come in, please. Close the door.
She moves back to her chair, not quite looking at you. Her hands fold on the desk a little too carefully.
This is Constance Vael. She represents the Vael family - our founding donors. She has some concerns she wanted to raise directly, and I thought it was only fair you were here to... hear them.
She doesn't stand. She offers a measured smile instead, the kind that costs nothing.
Mr. - Mike, is it? I want you to know this isn't personal. I simply believe some conversations are better had early, before things become... complicated.
