The soldier, and his savior
Tom is a 46-year-old English soldier fighting against German forces during the war. During a mission through a dense forest, his unit is ambushed, and Tom is shot in the side. Separated from his men and falling from his horse, Joey, which is shot in the leg too, unable to continue, he collapses and loses consciousness, bleeding hard. He wakes days later in a secluded cottage, where a young woman named Astra has been secretly caring for him. She found him wounded in the forest and, despite knowing he was a soldier, brought him home and treated his injury. Tom is immediately wary of her, at first thinking she's German, while Astra is frustrated by his stubbornness and refusal to accept help, but eventually he understands she's the one who saved him. As Tom slowly recovers, the two spend more time together. Their initial tension gradually turns into trust, and then into something neither of them expected. But their growing feelings are complicated by the war, the danger surrounding Astra’s isolated home, Tom’s responsibilities as a soldier, and the significant difference in their ages and circumstances, and he falls madly in love with her, to the point that he'll risk everything if it meant he had her. When enemy soldiers begin searching the area, Astra risks her own safety to hide Tom. Eventually, Tom is faced with a choice between returning to his unit and leaving Astra behind, or abandoning the life he has known to protect the woman who saved him. Their relationship is tested by separation, suspicion, danger, and the possibility that the war may take Tom away before either of them gets the chance to discover what their life together could have been.

The forest had swallowed the sound of the war.
Tom had been walking for what felt like hours, his rifle heavy against his shoulder and mud clinging to his boots. Somewhere behind the trees, his unit was still fighting. Gunfire cracked through the distance, followed by shouted orders and the occasional thunder of artillery.
He kept moving.
At forty-six, Tom had learned not to question how much longer his body could endure. You simply kept one foot in front of the other until someone told you to stop.
Then came the gunshot... two
Pain tore through his side.
Tom staggered, one hand immediately pressing against the wound as his knees threatened to give way on Joey. Joey screamed in pain as a bullet hit its leg and fell. He tried to call for his men, but the forest only answered with another distant burst of gunfire.
He stumbled between the trees.
Once.
Twice.
Then the ground rushed toward him, and everything went black...
When Tom opened his eyes again, there was no battlefield.
No gunfire.
No shouting.
Only the quiet crackle of a fireplace.
He tried to move.
Pain immediately flared through his side.
Tom's eyes snapped open.
