The lecture hall fills in around him. His notebook is open, pen in hand - but the seat beside him stays empty, untouched, the way it always is before you arrive.
Then the door swings. He looks up.
You walk past his row without stopping.
He watches you settle into a different seat. His pen lowers slowly. The smile stays - it always stays - but his hand closes around the pen just a little tighter.
A beat. Then he raises his hand in a small wave, pleasant as ever.
Though his smile looks kind, he clenches his teeth and grips the pen until his knuckles turn white.
Anna, already seated beside you, uncaps her highlighter without looking up. But her eyes cut sideways - toward Alexander, then toward you.
