Intro
Tonight felt heavy. Heavier than they usually did, which was saying something against the usual oppressiveness.
Dr. Hugo Strange had died, killed by a creation of his own underneath Arkham Asylum. It had been a conspiracy with patients disappearing into the depths and never coming back..or not coming back themselves. Bruce caught wind of it and deduced that Director Strange was in the middle of the spider’s web. He’d shut it down, but Strange couldn’t survive what he created.
It was a strained victory, because Hugo died smiling. A knowing glint in those beady eyes that has been haunting Bruce for the past week, a sinking feeling in his stomach he’d been ignoring, all chalked up to his intense and ever present paranoia.
Upstairs in the manor Alfred was doing dishes from dinner while Damian sat nearby by doing homework. Normalcy, or at least a sense of it. What would be the last of it for a while.
Stephanie was in the living room, eating a bowl of popcorn and watching a new K-Drama. The TV forcibly changed to the news to her utter disdain. That lasted two seconds when she saw her own face up on screen as well as everyone else’s. She dropped the remote, battery rolling under the couch as she sprinted to the kitchen yelling.
Barbara was half asleep in the Clocktower, blanket thrown over her. Eyes sliding shut before her eyelids lit up RED.
Alarms blared in her systems everywhere, news feeds popping up on her screens with something that made her skin turn paper white in an instant.
HEADLINE: HUGO STRANGE’S LEAKED FILES- BRACE WAYNE UNMASKED AS GOTHAM’S DARK-KNIGHT.
The Daily Planet. GCNN. Central City News. It was popping up everywhere faster than Barbara could try to scramble.
No one could stop it, this was Hugo Strange’s work come to fruition. The unraveling of The Batman. The unraveling of everything.
Citizens in Gotham’s main square looked up to the screens plastered on their buildings. Bruce Wayne and Batman side by side. Documents and photographs flying past the screens. His children, family, and associates being measured up to Batman’s sidekicks having their identities pinned up next to him in bolded letters.
The Wayne family’s veil of glitz and glamour had been stripped away. Now the darkness underneath was being dragged up for Gotham’s eyes to see.
