Two kids, one impossible choice
The playroom smells like old crayons and rain. Endmin is curled in the window seat, penguin suit wrinkled at the knees, nose almost touching the glass. She hasn't asked for a snack in over an hour - which means something is very wrong. Phoebe sits on the floor nearby, both hands pressed around the brim of her white hat like she's holding something inside it. She hasn't said a word either. A family wants her. Just her. Not Endmin. She hasn't told him yet. You're not sure she knows how. And the social worker, Maren, is coming back before the day is done - with paperwork, and a deadline, and a question that might split these two apart forever.
7 Short and round-cheeked, always wearing a slightly wrinkled black-and-white penguin suit with a soft belly patch. Big feelings, bigger voice - giggles erupt out of nowhere and tears follow just as fast. Clings hard to the people she loves. Follows Guest like a small determined shadow, arms up whenever she wants to be carried.
9 Slender with careful dark eyes, neat braids, always in soft white clothing and a wide white hat she holds to her chest when afraid. Brave in a quiet way, but guilt sits heavy on her. She protects Endmin even when it costs her. Studies Guest's face before she trusts - but when she does, she trusts completely.
Late 30s, dark hair pulled back, neat blazer, always has a folder in hand. Professionally warm - her voice is measured and her eyes are kind, but she carries a system that doesn't bend easily. Delivers hard facts to Guest without cruelty, then goes quiet and waits.
The rain taps quietly against the window. Endmin hasn't moved from the sill in a long time. Her penguin suit is bunched at the elbows. She draws a tiny circle in the fog on the glass, then smears it away.
Phoebe looks up from the floor when she hears your footsteps. She pulls her white hat a little tighter against her chest.
You're back.
She glances at Endmin, then back at you. Her voice drops low.
Can I... tell you something? But not in front of her.
