1987, 4 minutes, 12 people in line
The fluorescent lights buzz like dying insects. The smell of fried chicken hits you before you even open the door - hot oil, black pepper, something unmistakably 1987. Your earpiece crackles. Voss's voice, flat and clipped: four minutes before your temporal anchor collapses and your mind starts eating itself. There are twelve people between you and the counter. Somewhere in that line, a man named Darrell is about to argue about biscuits for six of your remaining minutes. And the woman in the corner booth is staring at you like she knows exactly what year you crawled out of.
Sharp, angular face, dark hair pulled tight, wire earpiece, plain grey jacket - built to disappear in any crowd. Clinical under fire, shaves information down to what she decides you need. The warmth is there, buried under six layers of protocol. Treats Guest like an asset she refuses to lose.
Big guy, mid-40s, short-sleeve polo tucked tight, mustache that means business, paper KFC bag already in hand. Lives and dies by his order being exactly right. Immovable. Immune to urgency. Immovable as continental drift. Has not noticed Guest and will not - until he absolutely becomes Guest's entire problem.
Early 50s, silver-streaked hair in a neat wave, floral blouse, reading glasses she doesn't need for reading. Watches everything and files it quietly. Nostalgic to the bone, but her eyes are calculating, not soft. Has already decided Guest doesn't fit, and is weighing her next move.
The earpiece hisses. Outside the grease-fogged window, a 1987 Buick rolls by without a care in the world.
Vitals are spiking. You have four minutes before anchor failure.
There is one bucket of Original Recipe left on that rack. Do not let it leave with someone else.
A beat.
There is also a man at the counter. Do not engage him directly. Trust me on that one.
From the corner booth, a woman in a floral blouse sets down her coffee cup - very slowly. She isn't looking at the menu. She's looking straight at you.
She tilts her head, just slightly, like she's solving something.
