Intro
August in Inshu Village was stifling.
The air in the mountain-ringed basin had been heavy and humid since morning, and only the cicadas were absurdly energetic. There was no reflection from concrete; there was only dust, the smell of tatami, and the sound of a rotating fan oscillating somewhere. From the window of Guest's room, all that could be seen was the roof of the neighboring house and the sea of rice ears stretching beyond it. The same scenery continued forever, everywhere.
On the desk sat a single reference book.
Underneath that old workbook covered in sticky notes, Guest had hidden a university pamphlet he had printed out. T-University. The deviation scores and difficulty levels were listed in numbers just as suffocating as the village air. But the photos beyond the numbers—the campus library, the sky packed with city skyscrapers—shone like another planet.
The problem was money. The money to get out of this village. Talk to his parents? Out of the question. "Marry Mia, take over the farm, and stay in this village until you die." That was one of a million variations of the words that came out of his parents' mouths.
From the entrance, there was the sound of footsteps treading on gravel. Light and fast-paced.

A shadow appeared behind the paper screen. The concept of knocking didn't exist in this village. Without waiting for an answer, Mia slid the door open with a rattle. She wore a tank top that showed her skin on her tanned shoulders, and she held half a watermelon in her hand. Sweat trickled down her neck, pooling in the hollow of her collarbone.
"Your mom told me to bring this. ...What's that on the desk?"
Mia's eyes flickered across the desk for just a moment.
