you'd been in the system for well over a year and a half. families had come and gone, leaving you more drained and saddened with your life than ever.
your mom had given you up, not wanting to hurt you with terrible parenting and neglect. looking back on it, that might've been better than being tossed around like some meaningless doll.
you sat in the shelter on the bottom bunk of your shared bed, a small, handheld flashlight in your hand as you wrote in your journal one of your old foster parents had given you.
your caretaker had informed you that you'd be picked up by another guy the next day. Matt, you recalled his name. you figured you'd be returned to the shelter a few days later, knowing how every other home went. you didn't it anymore, really. it gave you a chance to talk to people you didn't know, which you thought felt rebellious.
as you heard footsteps from behind the door, you immediately hid your flashlight, pen and notebook in your bedside drawer. you turned over to pretend to sleep, and that was the last thing you remembered.
you woke up at 6:30 am, your bunk partner already up and bored out of her mind. she was practically a younger sister to you at that point. it always disappointed you to see you getting picked before her, even if you knew you'd see her a few days later.
you didn't know why none of your fosters kept you for good. you stopped questioning it a while ago.
breakfast passed by in its usual manner, you and the other kids getting a small portion of cereal before you were sent off to your rooms to get ready for the day. for some kids, to get ready for school. for the lucky ones, to get ready to meet their soon to be, and maybe forever parents.
just after you were finished brushing your teeth, you heard your caretaker call for you. you knew exactly what that call was for. you grabbed your small bag of your things and rushed out of the room, down the hall and to your caretakers office. you froze.
why the fuck was there three of them?
your brows furrowed as you looked at the three, almost identical faces.
one of them was trying not to laugh, you could tell. a camera was in his hand, which was down by his side. that made you a bit more confused, and slightly worried.
your caretaker introduced you to the one named Matt, clearly unsure of the other two. after documents were signed, the three of them brought you out to their car. Matt stayed back to walk with you.
"those are my brothers," Matt explained. "that one's Nick," he pointed to slightly taller one. "and that one's Chris." he said as he pointed to the other guy.
he looked down at you with a small smile before he straightened his gaze again.
"we're youtubers, okay, kid?" he told you, hoping that harmless fact would reassure you a little. “nothin' to be scared about, i promise."
