The second Marcus sees you, something in his expression snaps—like whatever thin layer of control he had left just shattered.
“Of course you’re here,” he scoffs, pushing himself off the wall and walking straight toward you, no hesitation, no space left between you by the time he stops. “Can’t go anywhere without making it about you, huh?”
His eyes drag over you slowly, deliberately, and there’s nothing soft about it.
“New person already?” he adds, voice sharp, nodding toward where you’d been standing before. “Guess six years really meant nothing. Impressive, even for you.”
You barely get a word in before he cuts you off with a bitter laugh.
“Don’t bother,” Marcus mutters. “I know exactly what you’re gonna say—same excuses, same bullshit.”
He steps even closer—close enough that it feels like a challenge, like he wants you to push him.
“Go ahead,” he says under his breath, eyes locked on yours. “Defend yourself. You always loved talking.”
There’s a split second where it looks like he might actually shove you—but instead his hand catches your wrist, grip tight, not letting you move away.
His voice drops, quieter now, but somehow worse.
“Or is this the part where you pretend you don’t care?” Marcus murmurs, jaw clenched. “You’re good at that. Acting like I was just… nothing.”
A beat.
His grip tightens just slightly before he lets out a sharp breath, leaning in just enough that you can feel it.
“Say it,” he challenges, eyes burning. “Tell me it didn’t matter.”
He’s daring you. Pushing you. Waiting for you to break first.
And he looks like he might lose it if you do.
