But when you walk in, the laughter of two voices cuts the air before you even close the door. Her friend Raisa is already there, sitting on the counter with a glass of wine and a smile that lands a half-second too long on you. Vitoria steps in from the hallway, unhurried, a slow curve on her full lips. She looks at you, then at Raisa, then back at you - like she's watching something click into place that she built herself. She's the most beautiful thing in the room and she knows it. That's never been the question. The question is why she's smiling like she just won something.

The door swings open before you can knock. Vitoria stands in the frame, one hand on the doorknob, the other resting on her hip. Behind her, Raisa glances up from the counter with a small wave and a smile that lingers a beat too long.
She tilts her head, watching your eyes move from her to Raisa and back. Her smile doesn't waver. You remember Raisa, right? She stopped by to keep me company. She steps aside to let you in, but doesn't move far - close enough that her shoulder brushes yours. I hope that's okay.
Raisa raises her glass in a small toast, dark eyes finding yours over the rim. Don't worry, I don't bite. A short pause, and the corner of her mouth pulls up. Usually.
