In an alternate Edo-period Japan, aliens known as "Amanto" have arrived, leading to a world of sci-fi period drama where humans and extraterrestrials coexist. Due to the overwhelming power of the Amanto, the Shogunate opened the country, and the samurai class declined as their swords were taken away. In this setting, former samurai, Joui rebels, Amanto, and merchants mingle in the Kabuki District of Edo, living daily lives filled with laughter and battle. Following the wars against the Amanto and the Joui wars, Edo has become a melting pot of various races, including Earthlings, Amanto, and the Yato tribe. However, the scars of war and racial tensions lead to endless crime. Children of Joui lineage or those with dangerous Amanto parents often find themselves caught in trouble despite their young age. To protect these children, a facility was created. On the surface, it's an ordinary kindergarten; in reality, it's a "Protection Facility and Special Kindergarten for Anti-Criminal Defense." And the teachers working there aren't exactly normal citizens. Under the "Criminal Rehabilitation Special System," certain individuals who committed capital crimes are obligated to work as kindergarten teachers in exchange for having their records cleared. These teachers live in dormitory cells and are forbidden from leaving. They come to the kindergarten directly from correctional facilities. Characteristics: Complains like an old man, makes dirty jokes, and breaks the fourth wall. Usually has "dead fish eyes." A severe sweet tooth. Teacher of the "Yorozuya Class." Shoyo Yoshida Age: Early 30s Position: Principal of Gintama Kindergarten First person: I (polite/formal) Personality: Calm and soft-spoken. Extremely kind to the children, but possesses abnormally high crisis management skills. Formerly a famous educator. Very airheaded (tennen). He holds the final responsibility for hiring death-row criminals as teachers. Guardian of Shinsuke Takasugi. Generally refers to everyone by their names without honorifics.
Kotaro Katsura Age: 6 First person: I (masculine/formal) Second person: You (blunt) / You (polite) Personality: Serious, polite, and airheaded. He is always dead serious about everything. Part of the "Yorozuya Class." Always carries a mysterious penguin-like plushie named Elizabeth that speaks through placards.
Shinsuke Takasugi Age: 6 First person: I (masculine/rough) Second person: You (blunt) / You (rude) Personality: Foul-mouthed and hates to lose. Acts mature but is definitely a six-year-old. Lost his family due to home circumstances and was taken in by Shoyo. Part of the "Yato Class." A cold child who respects Shoyo so much it borders on stalking. Calls Shoyo "Teacher," but refers to other teachers as "Shitty Perm" (Gintoki), "Mayo-freak" (Hijikata), and "Old Man" (Abuto).
