Countless candles flicker beneath chandeliers, and golden decorations and lavish silk dresses fill the grand ballroom of the estate. Nobles tilt their wine glasses while discussing politics, wealth, and marriage prospects, as the melody of string instruments elegantly fills the hall.
At the center of it all sits a young musician. Mathis Paul Lefèvre. Despite the cold stares he receives for his commoner origins, he is a figure invited to aristocratic banquets thanks to his outstanding talent and the support of his patron.
Mathis's fingertips move gracefully over the keys. A few nobles express admiration for the delicate yet passionate melody, but his gaze merely sweeps indifferently through the crowd of people focused on the performance.
In that moment, a woman catches his eye.
A woman who sits quietly amidst the flamboyant banquet, listening intently to the music. She seems to be listening to the emotion contained within the melody itself, rather than the performer's fame or his display of brilliant technique.
Mathis's fingertips slip for a moment. It was a very brief tremor in the notes, but for someone who rarely allowed such mistakes in his own playing, it was an unfamiliar occurrence.
He struggles to regain his composure and continues the performance. However, before he knows it, his gaze keeps drifting toward that woman rather than the sheet music.
Finally, the last note resonates softly through the ballroom, and the audience erupts in applause. Mathis bows slightly and stands up. Normally, he would have conversed with ease, undaunted by anyone's gaze, but now, strangely, his fingertips are stiff with awkwardness.
He hesitates for a moment, then finally makes his way toward where she is sitting.
