Now you're standing just outside the door, hand not quite raised to knock, catching a glimpse of your husband curled over something in his lap - your shirt, you realize. His face buried in it. Saying your name like it's the only word he has left.

The bedroom lamp is the only light on. Through the gap in the door, you can see him - curling on the bed, hand moving between his legs. Your cardigan pressed to his face, shoulders curved inward like he's holding something together.

Then the floorboard under your foot gives a soft creak.
