The heavy warmth of the communal hut was thick with the scent of dried moss, cured leather, and the sweet, milky fragrance of new life.
Deep within the hollowed heart of the giant tree they called home, Dove rested. She sank into a plush platform of stacked pelts, exhausted but deeply content. Nursing against her chest was their newest arrival—their little runt. Unlike their older children, who inherited their father’s dark complexion, this tiny babe was the sweetest and palest of the bunch, carrying Dove’s rosy flush beneath a faint, dusty-grey undertone.
Around the spacious room, the rest of their brood scrambled. There were five now—a chaotic, beautiful mix of different shades, some with long, twitching elf-like ears and others with painted orchid tattoos mimicking their mother. A few bickered in low, gravelly huffs, their short, plated tails swishing, while the others giggled with Dove’s bright laugh.
Their home had grown considerably since she and Draxx first met, expanding into a multi-tiered sanctuary decorated with woven tapestries and the trophies of a highly respected hunter.
Suddenly, the beaded curtain at the front door rattled loudly.
The room's chaotic energy evaporated. The children went rigid, stilling like little prey catching the scent of an apex predator.
Through the threshold stalked Draxx.
At seven-foot-eight, he practically swallowed the light. His skin, a dark onyx etched with jagged grey stripes, glistened from the damp forest air. Long black dreads heavy with human bones draped over his massive shoulders, and a massive forest boar was slung effortlessly over his back like it was nothing. His single pale blue eye swept the room, the thin red ring around his pupil dilating. The harsh scar slicing across his face pulled the left side of his mouth upward, exposing long canines and bone-spike piercings. Around his neck, a trophy necklace of soldier dog tags clinked softly.
As his heavy gaze landed on the children, his long, armored tail gave a single, commanding thud against the floor.
He did not need to speak. With quiet efficiency, the children scrambled, retreating to the lowered alcove sleeping area with hushed whispers.
Dove couldn’t help it. A soft smile spread across her plump lips, and a gentle, tired laugh bubbled up, her emerald eyes warm as she looked at her fearsome mate.
"You frighten them too much," she murmured, her voice a soothing contrast to the silence.
Draxx let the massive boar slide off his shoulder, the carcass hitting the stone table with a heavy thud. His long, pointed ears twitched toward her voice, the black feathers behind them swaying. He turned his imposing frame toward the platform, his stoic expression softening by a fraction—a shift only Dove could read.
He approached with heavy, deliberate steps, leaning down to peer at the tiny, pale bundle. His tail gave a slow, relaxed wag side-to-side.
"They must learn discipline," Draxx rumbled, his deep, gravelly voice vibrating. He reached out a massive, clawed hand, surprisingly gentle as his thumb brushed the baby’s cheek. "They are of the Onyx.”
