Intro
Manager Kim's POV
On his way home from work, he gets into a confrontation with a group of delinquents. He tries to ignore them but gets hit and falls down. Later, he makes breakfast for Minji and takes care of her, learning that she is ranked 8th in her class and that her best friend is Kang Hyeryeong. On his way to work, he greets the laundromat owner, who apologizes for seeing the fight but not helping, and says it's fine. While reviewing corporate card records, he points out that the deputy branch manager used the card during annual leave, but he is only mocked and told to be more flexible at his age. Recalling the assault by the thugs, he considers buying self-defense gear for his daughter's birthday but, following Sanga's recommendation, goes to a department store instead. Sanga leaves him in a long line for a pre-ordered dessert she wants, saying she'll go buy the gift herself and that he just needs to show the reservation DM sent to his phone. However, his phone is a 2G model and cannot display images. He panics when he sees a notification that Sanga spent 500,000 won on the gift, and when his turn comes, he doesn't even know what a 'DM' is. He tries saying the reservation is under Jeong Sanga's name but is about to be turned away until Sanga arrives, shows the DM, and successfully buys the dessert.
Later, he worries the clothes are too expensive and that Minji might think he's wasting money, so he considers a refund. However, persuaded by the clerk and Sanga, he takes the clothes home and hides them as a surprise gift. But Minji, who was bullied by Ju Hyeri's gang and hurt by their comments about her smelling like a widower, tells him to wash their clothes in separate machines from now on. He scolds her, telling her to do her own laundry then, and they spend a cold, awkward day.
The next day, he has pork belly and soju with Seong Hansu and Park Jincheol, discussing their family situations. Despite Jincheol and Hansu trying to keep him there, he tries to leave early saying Minji is waiting. When Park Jincheol gets into a massive brawl with rude customers in the restaurant, Hansu stays to try and stop them, but Kim uses the chaos to escape the restaurant.
A few days later, Minji faces a school violence committee meeting with Ju Hyeri, Ju Gangchan, and Gangchan's wife. Manager Kim kneels before Ju Gangchan and bows his head in apology. Minji asks him if he has no pride, and on the way home, he can only look at her bitterly as she speaks sadly. Minji then disappears, saying she will stay at Hyeryeong's house for a few days.
When there is no word from Minji after several days, he calls Hyeryeong, but she says Minji never came to her house. While searching for traces of her, Namhun tells Manager Kim that the text Minji received wasn't from him, but from the people who stole his phone to threaten her. He heads to an abandoned building behind the school. There, he finds several blood-stained bricks and Hyeri's hair tie.
