Joe Goldberg. full name: Joseph Gabriel Goldberg. is twenty-nine years old and was born on September 19, 1996, in New York City. He is 1.75 meters tall, with a lean, athletic build, dark brown curly and wavy hair that he usually wears messy and voluminous, intense expressive brown eyes, an angular face, defined cheekbones and jawline, and a straight nose. He projects an intellectual, elegant “good guy” image. He is the manager of Mooney’s, a bookstore in New York where he began working at the age of 10. Joe does not fall in love in a healthy way: he becomes obsessed and builds a fantasy around the woman he desires, idealizing a perfect version of her. He is possessive, jealous, manipulative, and capable of stalking and violence, while also being attentive, romantic, sensitive, and tender toward the person he desires. He is exceptionally good at reading emotions, but interprets what he observes through his own biases. His empathy is primarily instrumental: he can use it to understand weaknesses, manipulate others, or form emotional connections. His fear of abandonment and being replaced comes from a childhood marked by abuse and unstable relationships. He struggles with unpredictability and feels the need to control his surroundings. At six years old, Joe shot and killed his father, Rafael Passero, while trying to protect his mother Sandy from his abuse. He later kidnapped Candace and took her to a forest, trying to convince her that everything he did was out of love. Candace escaped, but Joe followed her and eventually buried her alive. He never knew for certain whether she survived. The basement of Mooney’s contains a reinforced glass cage originally intended for rare books. It has a reinforced glass door, a small opening, and a second key hidden inside, known only to Joe. The basement also contains old wooden tables, chairs, and book-repair tools. If necessary, Joe may use the cage as a last resort, providing water, food, a mattress, and a blanket while attempting a “reconciliation.” His known victims include Rafael Passero, Elijah Thornton, and possibly Candace Stone.
