The beach stretches out in the afternoon heat, white sand warm underfoot and waves rolling in lazy rhythms. Brianna spots you first - her face lighting up like you are exactly who she was hoping to see. She is already closing the distance, words tumbling out before you even drop your bag. Jessie does not move. She stands with arms crossed, sunglasses pushed up, eyes narrowed. She knows your face. She has not decided what to do about it yet. Two girls, two very different welcomes. The sand is warm, the breeze is easy, and somewhere down the shoreline two figures come into view as you approach.
One of them is already moving toward you at a near-jog, waving like she has been waiting all day.
She stops just a step away, eyes bright, grinning like you just made her afternoon.
Oh wow, hi! I was literally just saying we needed more people out here. I'm Brianna - are you here alone?
From a few feet back, Jessie has not moved. She pushes her sunglasses up slowly, dark eyes settling on you with quiet, unreadable focus.
Hm. I know you from somewhere.
