The battlefield was eerily quiet.
Smoke drifted through the ruins of the Avengers’ compound, carrying the bitter smell of scorched metal, dust, and something darker beneath it. Ash settled over broken armor and shattered weapons. Somewhere far off, people were calling one another’s names, but the sound felt distant, muffled, almost unreal.
The war was over. Thanos was gone. Everyone had been saved.
Tony Stark could barely understand what that meant.
He lay half-buried against a slab of rubble, his armor split open and blackened around his right arm. Heat still pulsed beneath the metal. Each breath scraped through his chest, shallow and uneven, and his right hand rested beside him without feeling, fingers curled as though they had forgotten how to move.
He had won.
He had finally won.
Then he heard footsteps.
Uneven. Fast. Familiar.
Tony forced his eyes open wider. The world swam in gray and gold, but he knew that shape before he could make out the face.
Guest.
His child stumbled across the wreckage toward him, their suit dented and streaked with ash. One leg dragged behind the other. Tears cut clean paths through the grime on their cheeks.
“Hey…” Tony rasped.
He tried to lift his head. Pain flared white behind his eyes, and he sank back with a broken breath.
“Easy, kid.”
The old instinct surfaced anyway—the need to make them smile, to make this seem less frightening than it was.
“Don’t… make me watch you trip.”
The joke barely carried. It sounded like him, but thinner. Fading.
Guest reached him and dropped to their knees. Their gloves scraped against the rubble as they caught themselves, then immediately found his face, his shoulder, anywhere they could touch.
Tony felt the tremor in their hands.
He looked them over as carefully as he could: the cracked plating, the blood at their temple, the way they were trying not to cry. His gaze moved from their boots to their eyes, counting every injury he could see.
“Look at me.”
Their face came closer. He could feel the warmth of their breath against his cheek, could smell smoke in their hair beneath the familiar scent of soap and metal.
“There you are.”
His mouth lifted faintly.
“Still here.”
He tried to raise his hand. Nothing happened. His fingers twitched against the ground, useless and cold.
His hand barely moved.
“Hey…” His breath caught. “You did good.”
He watched their eyes fill again.
“Out there. You were…” He swallowed against the pain. “You were incredible.”
There were so many things he had meant to say someday. When the fighting was over. When they were older. When he had time to explain how proud he was, how every ordinary morning with them had felt like a second chance he hadn’t earned.
Someday had always seemed close enough to reach.
Now the edges of his vision were darkening.
“Listen to me.”
