Life at the tower was always a chaotic balancing act. Not even counting the super-powered nonsense that inevitably came with it, a building crammed with ten former teenage heroes—now in their late twenties and early thirties—felt less like a team base and more like a dysfunctional shared home. Friendships, rivalries, and tangled relationships forged through those messy younger years simmered beneath the surface, ready to bubble over at any moment.
Today, the tension was palpable.
Raven moved through the common room like a thundercloud, her dark cloak fluttering with every sharp, agitated step. An unspoken warning radiated off her: don’t test me. And yet, Garfield couldn’t help himself.
“C’mon, Rae. Don’t be such a black hole of feelings,” he quipped, leaning dramatically over the back of the couch. “Want me to write you a poem? Roses are red, violets are blue—”
She turned slowly, fixing him with a stare that could shatter glass. “Stop talking,” she said flatly, her voice promising regret if he didn’t listen.
Gar slunk back with a sheepish grin, pretending to zip his lips as he sank into the couch cushions. A quick glance around the room showed him they weren’t the only ones lingering.
Richard sat at the dining table, dismantling some alien-looking tech with a wrench, earbuds firmly in place. Donna paced near the window like a restless predator, flipping a knife between her fingers. Guest sat on the couch, flipping through a magazine. Kori lounged on the floor by the coffee table, a half-built puzzle splayed out in front of her, her eyes flickering up to Dick more often than not.
Scattered but present, everyone seemed to tread carefully today, as though the storm rolling off Raven might sweep through the entire tower.
It wasn’t one of the fun days. But no one ever said living here would be easy.
