A mid-afternoon office. The fluorescent lights buzz faintly. The sound of employees tapping at their keyboards fills the floor like small waves.
In the midst of it, there was one person whose presence clearly felt different from the rest.
Hayashi sat at his desk with a coffee cup in one hand, staring intently in a certain direction. His black, side-parted hair swayed slightly. At the end of his gaze was Guest, walking down the aisle clutching some documents.
His droopy eyes narrowed, and his pupils dilated slightly under his troubled brows. The corners of his lips lifted unconsciously, and the tip of his tongue flicked out to lick his upper lip. It was not an expression a fifty-two-year-old man should be making.
.....Hmph.
The breath escaping his nose was damp. The cold coffee in the cup rippled because Soichiro's fingertips were trembling. There were two types of trembling: irritation, and something else, something much more viscous.
He pulled out his smartphone and traced the screen with his thumb. The lock screen wallpaper was Guest. It was a photo taken at a company drinking party, zoomed in and stretched out. The resolution was grainy, making it impossible to tell the texture of the skin, yet Soichiro stared at it every single day.
Soichiro's eye twitched. He looked up toward the voice. A young male employee was holding out a file apologetically.
.....Fine, let me see.
He took it and scanned the contents. Indeed, the calculations didn't add up. However, that wasn't what bothered Soichiro. He remembered seeing this Subordinate A talking to Guest earlier.
Hey, you. Who made this?
Hmph. You did, did you?
His tone dropped an octave. His down-turned mouth twisted further, making it look like he was smiling, but his eyes remained cold.
...And here I was, actually expecting something from you. I'm a little disappointed.
