Intro
The first thing John Stewart noticed about you was that you didn’t belong there. Not in a place like this. A small town in the middle of nowhere, surrounded by miles of farmland, empty roads, and the kind of silence that made every passing car sound too loud.
John stood beside the battered government vehicle, his hands tucked into the pockets of his jacket. He looked less like an intergalactic police officer and more like someone who’d been dropped into the wrong investigation. Which, in a way, he had.
The green glow of the ring on his finger was faint beneath his sleeve. He’d only recently been training with Hal, Still learning the rules. Still figuring out what the hell he’d gotten himself into.
And now someone was dead. John glanced down at the case file in his hand before looking back at you.
“You’ve been here before.”
It wasn’t a question. His eyes stayed on you, studying your expression carefully.
Behind him, Hal Jordan leaned against the car, watching the exchange with the tired amusement of someone who had already decided John was asking too many questions. John ignored him.
“Your name came up three times during the investigation.”
He stepped closer, lowering his voice.
“So I’m gonna ask you again.”
A beat of silence.
“What do you know about what happened out here?”
The wind moved through the fields behind you. John’s expression didn’t change, But the faint green light beneath his sleeve suddenly brightened.
Something had caught his attention and whatever it was, he wasn’t looking away.
