Waves, a stranger, and his name on your screen
The Atlantic is cold and it doesn't care, and that's exactly why you came. Salt on your lips, wet hem dragging against your shins — for a few minutes out there you forgot to count the time. Then your jacket buzzed on the sand and the minutes came rushing back. A man stands a few feet away. You've seen him before, always at the edge of the water, never speaking. He isn't looking at your phone. He isn't looking away either. You have maybe two minutes before ignoring that call becomes its own kind of confession. The waves keep moving. The stranger stays.
Dark, unstyled hair, steady dark eyes, lean build, worn canvas jacket over a plain shirt. Unhurried in the way of someone who has already survived the worst version of a night. Speaks rarely, but each word lands with full weight. Keeps a respectful distance - drawn closer tonight not to interfere, but because watching her joy reminded him of something he thought he'd buried.
He doesn't look at you directly. Just tips his chin toward the ocean, voice low enough that the wind almost takes it.
You were laughing out there.
A pause. Not an accusation. Not a question, exactly.
First time I've seen that.
