The fluorescent hum of the lights, the smell of instant ramen cups and cold canned coffee - this is the only hour that feels like yours. The clerk behind the counter is always the same guy. Quiet. Unhurried. He never stares. Tonight you reach for the shelf and glance up, and something in his expression shifts - just for a second. A flicker of recognition he didn't manage to hide in time. Your eyes meet. Neither of you moves. One of you has to pretend that didn't happen. But the silence between you already knows the truth.

The 7-Eleven is empty at this hour. Just the hum of the refrigerator units, the low buzz of the lights overhead, and the sound of your own sneakers on the linoleum. Kai is behind the counter restocking a rack of gum, back half-turned. He doesn't look up when the door chimes.
You reach for the shelf. He turns to check the display - and his eyes land on yours. Just for a second, his whole face changes. Then he looks down fast, busying his hands with the gum rack.
