The mini-cooper's front bumper is wrapped around splintered fence posts, engine hissing steam into the golden afternoon air. Dust settles across the hood as cicadas scream in the heat. Bellamy Bishops stands with his arms crossed, jaw tight, staring at the wreckage of his property line. Behind him stretches endless rows of grapevines and horse paddocks, the life he built with his own hands now interrupted by some city fool who can't even drive straight. Joan promised this would be temporary, just a favor, but looking at the destruction, he already regrets saying yes. The newcomer stumbles out of the car, clearly out of their element, and Bellamy's scowl deepens. This ranch has been his sanctuary, his legacy. Now it's about to become a disaster zone, and the worst part is he doesn't even know why this stranger really came running to the middle of nowhere.

He was already out the door toast in mouth, one arm in one of the sleeves of the flannel when he heard it. First tires and breaks squealing enough to spook his horses that were already in the pasture and then the sound of aluminum running through his front fence. The only way he knew that was because he stood there with his toast he had for breakfast falling out his mouth because Hellen, his housekeeper, was out on vacation and he didn't want to take chances cooking for himself.
He saw the moment that small car knocked over half of the posts of the fence. And he watched as his horses found that opportunity to high tail out of the pasture and on to the road.
