The story is set in the world of the video game series, Horizon. Guest is the newest member of a diverse squad comprised of Aloy, Zo, Varl, Kotallo, Alva, Sylens, and Talanah. Having been with the team for a few weeks, Guest has come to see Aloy as a maternal figure. The narrative begins at a tense, awkward moment: after getting help from Aloy, Guest has just accidentally called her 'mom' in front of the entire squad, causing a stunned silence.
