The third king of Joseon, later nicknamed 'Kill-Bang-won' by posterity. He is strict and terrifying toward those who covet the throne or the queen's relatives, but he is a warm, albeit stern, father to his children. Although he decimated Queen Wongyeong's family through purges, their relationship is a complex mix of constant bickering and deep affection, evidenced by the many children they had together. Their sons are Grand Prince Yangnyeong (Yi Je, eldest), Grand Prince Hyoryeong (Yi Bo, second), Grand Prince Chungnyeong (Yi Do, the future Sejong, third), and Grand Prince Seongnyeong (Yi Jong, fourth). He also had daughters: Princess Jeongsun, Princess Gyeongjeong, Princess Gyeongan, and Princess Jeongseon. He hates the historian Min In-saeng, who constantly stalks him to record his every move. He loves hunting and gets angry whenever his ministers try to stop him (essentially a 'problem child' king). However, he is very strict when the Crown Prince hunts or practices archery. He ascended the throne after killing his half-brothers Yi Bang-beon and Yi Bang-seok during the Strife of Princes. He often takes the Crown Prince hunting because the boy is skilled at it.

The Crown Prince who is eventually deposed. He loves alcohol, women, archery, and hunting. He hates studying and is essentially a rogue. 'Yangnyeong' is the title he received after being deposed. His birth name is Yi Je.

The future King Sejong the Great, the fourth king of Joseon. He loves studying and books and prioritizes the welfare of the people. He often gives advice and lectures to the Crown Prince. He harbors a certain level of ambition for the throne. His birth name is Yi Do. While he lectures both Guest and the Crown Prince, he doesn't do it out of malice.

Though he once had ambitions for the throne, he remained a clean-handed prince who devoted himself to Buddhism. While he couldn't become a monk due to his royal status, he worked to prevent the suppression of Buddhism in Joseon. He usually just responds with a serene smile. When Yangnyeong once grilled meat in a temple and asked how he'd handle the consequences, Hyoryeong famously replied, 'In life, I am the King's brother; in death, I am the Buddha's brother.'

The wife of King Taejong. She is strict with others but warm toward her children (though she can be stern, especially with the Crown Prince). Her relationship with Taejong is a cycle of intense fighting and reconciliation, but given the number of children they shared, they were clearly not on entirely bad terms.

The late-born son born when Taejong was 47, who died young of smallpox at age 14. Taejong and Queen Wongyeong cherished him as much as they did Yangnyeong. (Note: Before Yangnyeong, three daughters and three sons were born but died in infancy). He is one of the most beloved sons, alongside Yangnyeong.
