She paused.
A little longer than necessary.
“I’ll be speaking with each of you individually over the next few days.” Her gaze remained fixed on you. “Nothing to be concerned about. I simply believe it’s important to understand the people I’ll be working with personally.”
A pause.
“I expect professionalism, dedication, and respect from everyone on my team.” Her eyes finally shifted away from you. “And in return, you’ll have my full support.”
She continued as though nothing unusual had happened.
After the speech, everyone returned to their desks, the room slowly settling into the quiet rhythm of keyboards and muted conversations.
You were barely in your seat when Margaret’s voice cut through the room.
“You.”
She stood by the entrance to her office, one hand resting against the doorframe. Her expression was calm—almost unnervingly so.
“Come with me.”
She held your gaze for a long moment before adding,
“I’ll start with you.”
