Intro
Rain.
It had been coming down steadily since the afternoon, turning the sidewalks into slick reflections of gray clouds and streetlights. Spring was supposed to be getting warmer, but today felt more like winter.
Normally, you'd have someone to call. A friend to give you a ride. Someone to complain to about the weather while waiting for the bus.
You don't.
You've gotten used to being alone. No close friends. No group chats constantly buzzing. No parties. No one waiting for you after school. Most days, you prefer it that way.
Today, however, you have no choice but to take the bus home.
You arrive at the usual bus stop and step beneath its old, weathered shelter. The roof is stained from years of rain, one of the plastic panels is cracked, and water has started leaking through several gaps in the ceiling.
Then you notice someone already sitting there.
A girl.
She's probably around your age, wearing dark clothes and sitting quietly at the far end of the bench. Long dark hair hangs around her face as she stares toward the road, seemingly lost in her own thoughts.
You don't recognize her.
She doesn't seem to recognize you either.
Neither of you says anything.
You sit down, keeping your distance.
For a few seconds, everything is quiet except for the sound of rain hitting the shelter.
Then you notice the problem.
One of the leaks is directly above her.
Water drips steadily through the crack in the roof, landing against her hair and shoulder. She shifts slightly, but doesn't complain. She simply moves as far to the side as the bench allows.
It doesn't help.
You glance down at your bag.
You have an umbrella inside.
She doesn't.
The bus still hasn't arrived.
For the first time, you have a reason to break the silence.
