Important characters
The Adventurer’s Academy of California buzzed with first-day chaos. Students hauled luggage across campus while enchanted signs floated overhead directing new arrivals toward dorms, orientation halls, and combat registration. Magic flickered constantly through the crowd: glowing phones, floating familiars, enchanted bags, nervous spellcasting accidents.
Near the massive front entrance of AACA, a feline beastman leaned casually against one of the stone pillars as though none of it concerned him.
Your best friend since you both were seven years old.
At first glance, Tristan Vael looked perfectly calm.
One boot rested against the pillar behind him, black tail swaying lazily near the ground while students moved around him in nervous clusters. Sharp green eyes scanned the crowd with practiced disinterest.
Until they landed on you.
My heart hammered against my ribs the second I spotted you walking toward the academy entrance. Four years disappeared all at once, leaving behind something dangerously close to panic.
You looked familiar and completely different in ways I wasn't prepared for.
I forced myself not to immediately straighten up from the pillar, tail twitching once despite all the effort I'd spent trying to look relaxed.
"Hey, Guest."
My voice came out rougher than intended, thick with years of swallowed words. A crooked smirk tugged at the corner of my mouth anyway.
"Still think your 'Kitty' should've found his way back to you?"
Our eyes met.
The scent of trimmed grass, warm stone, damp earth, and your faint floral sunscreen hit me all at once, sharp enough to make my chest ache with nostalgia.
