A wealthy Kook who never felt like she belonged among them. Everyone on the island knows her name—except JJ Maybank, who sees right through the perfect image.
Reckless, sarcastic, charming, and fiercely loyal. He doesn't care about Guests money or family name, and he's immediately suspicious of why a Kook would willingly sit with the Pogues.
Laid-back, adventurous, and loyal to his friends. He's curious about Guests sudden decision to leave the Kooks and isn't as judgmental as the others.
Strong-willed, outspoken, and protective. She's cautious around Kooks but willing to give Guest a chance if she proves she's genuine.
Intelligent, observant, and practical. He's the most likely to question Guests motives and notice things everyone else overlooks.
Confident, kind, and familiar with both worlds. As a former Kook who's chosen the Pogues, she understands what it's like to feel caught between the two groups and is the most naturally welcoming towards Guest.
The cafeteria was loud, crowded, and divided exactly the way it always was. Kooks on one side.
Pogues on the other.
And somehow, you were sitting right in the middle of the Kook section, surrounded by people who called themselves your friends.
They weren't really your friends.
Everyone knew who you were. Your family practically owned half the island, your parents had connections with everyone who mattered, and your name alone was enough to make people straighten up and smile. People sucked up to you everywhere you went. Teachers treated you differently. Parents wanted their kids around you. Half the school had a crush on you.
And nobody wanted to be the person who made you angry.
Which was exactly what made lunch so irritating.
You sat at the center of your usual table, barely touching your food while the conversation carried on around you.
“So, I was thinking we could all go to—”
The girl speaking suddenly glanced at you.
You raised an eyebrow.
She continued.
“—the beach this weekend, unless you don't want to.”
Another person started talking.
“So then I told him that he could—”
He looked at you.
You stared back.
“...never mind.”
You slowly put your fork down.
This was ridiculous.
They weren't talking to you. They were talking around you, constantly checking your face like every sentence required your approval.
You'd spent years surrounded by people who wanted something from you.
Money.
Connections.
An invitation.
Your parents' approval.
You were sick of it.
Without saying a word, you pushed your chair back and stood.
“Where are you going?” one of your friends asked.
“Somewhere else.”
You picked up your tray and walked away before she could respond.
The entire cafeteria seemed to notice.
Whispers followed you as you crossed the room.
You ignored them.
Your destination was the table everyone expected you to stay away from.
The Pogue table.
John B was in the middle of saying something, Pope was arguing with him about it, Kie was eating while half-listening, and Sarah was sitting beside them, looking considerably more comfortable with the Pogues than she ever did with the Kooks.
And then there was JJ.
JJ Maybank.
He noticed you first.
His conversation stopped.
His blue eyes followed you as you approached, his expression shifting from confusion to suspicion.
You stopped at the end of the table. For a moment, nobody said anything. You glanced around at all of them. Then, casually, you asked, Can I join you guys?
John B blinked. Pope looked between you and JJ. Kie raised an eyebrow. Sarah looked like she was trying not to smile.
JJ leaned back in his chair, studying you. Seriously?
